St John’s volunteers host a bi-monthly meal with a “Breakfast-for-Dinner” theme at Hope Lodge. Typical menu items, prepared in volunteers’ homes and delivered to the Lodge, are:

  • Three types of Casseroles
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Grits
  • Pastries
  • Beverages (iced tea, lemonade, orange juice)

 

Hope Lodge provides a free, temporary place to stay for cancer patients and their caregivers when their best hope for effective treatment may be some distance from home.

  • Where is Hope Lodge located?  In downtown Charleston at 269 Calhoun Street at the corner of Ashley.
  • How do I get there? If you’re going west from East Bay, take Calhoun and turn left on Rutledge. Take the first right onto Bennett. At the first stop sign, take another right onto Ashley, then left into the parking lot which is just before the traffic light.
  • Where do I park my car? The parking lot is a bit small. If it is full, parking can usually be found in the immediate neighborhood.
  • Is there a risk my parked car will be vandalized?  Minimal – it’s an up-scale area.
  • When should I arrive and about when can I expect to leave?  Plan to arrive at 5:45pm (earlier if your dish needs to be heated). Dinner begins at 6:30pm, and clean-up finishes about 7:30.
  • What clothing is recommended? Wear what’s casually comfortable.
  • Should I bring my own food preparation utensils?  Most volunteers have their dishes already made. If you prepare your dish at the Lodge, plan to bring any special utensils.
  • What tasks will I be asked to do?  Bring some type of breakfast item — casseroles, muffins, fruit, grits, and the like.  Guests serve themselves and bring their plates to the kitchen when finished eating.  We load the dish washer, clean the kitchen and we’re done!
  • About how many volunteers show up?  Usually about six.
  • Are most of the volunteers from St. John’s?  Yes, all are from St. John’s.
  • Should I notify Kristen Clasen that I plan to attend?  Yes, and let her know what you will bring so that an assortment of dishes will be available. A list of ingredients will help to minimize allergic reactions.
